Poiein is an ancient word, a Greek verb that means to create. It is where we get the English word poem and its derivatives. The office of the poet has long represented the pinnacle of human creation, beauty, and meaning. Poets were, and are often still today, viewed as prophetic, mediators of truth and glory between the divine and the human. Poets, in the final analysis, express ideas, ideas that have the power to confront us with the depth of human meaning. This is a podcast about ideas, ideas from the vast vault of things humans have created, ideas that have governed the long history of human action, ideas that deserve our reconsideration. Each episode forms part of a theme. We will take an idea from a poem, a novel, a movie, an article, or anything that has come to us from the impulse of poiein, the human impulse to create.
