3AK SEN 1116 AM

Mid-century commercial radio allocations across Victoria saw the historic callsign 3AK occupy the medium-wave dial for decades before transitioning formats entirely in January 2004. The station abandoned conventional music and lifestyle talk on 19 January 2004 to introduce a round-the-clock sports schedule on 1116 kHz AM.

Early morning slots originally featured Australian Football League players Garry Lyon, Tim Watson, and Billy Brownless anchoring the breakfast franchise, while Richmond veteran Kevin Bartlett held morning discussions. Regular analysis segments feature commentary from Gerard Whateley and Kane Cornes dissecting national athletic disputes, draft selections, and weekly fixture results. Live play-by-play reporting concentrates on Australian Football League matches, international test cricket, domestic basketball, and regional thoroughbred racing. Direct talkback lines invite Victorian supporters to debate tactical adjustments throughout afternoon and drive shifts. Transmission infrastructure situated at Lower Plenty relays medium-wave coverage across Greater Melbourne, complemented by digital audio via DAB+ block 9A.
