Broadcasting since June 29, 1964, Manx Radio holds the distinction of being the first legal commercial radio service in the British Isles, launching nearly a decade before such operations were permitted in the United Kingdom due to the Isle of Man's self-governing status. From its studio complex in Douglas, this national public service media provider offers a diverse programming schedule across its AM, FM, and DAB platforms. Its powerful 1368 kHz AM transmitter from Foxdale provides extensive coverage, reaching not only the entire Isle of Man but also southern Scotland, northwest England, north Wales, and parts of Ireland. The station maintains a regulatory commitment to at least 40% speech output on weekdays, encompassing local news, current affairs such as “Mannin Line,” weather, and comprehensive sports coverage. Beyond its adult contemporary music format, Manx Radio is also dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Manx Gaelic language, featuring programs like “Claare Ny Gael” and educational resources. During the famous Isle of Man TT races, the 1368 kHz AM frequency transforms into a dedicated channel for race news, results, and live commentary. The station formally became the national public service broadcaster in 2002, with its status legislatively reinforced in 2014.
