From its studios in Downtown Cleveland, WKSU delivers a continuous stream of news and public affairs programming across Northeast Ohio on 89.7 FM. Originally launched on October 2, 1950, as one of the earliest educational FM stations in the United States, the station has grown to become the region's primary National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate. WKSU's extensive reach covers 22 counties, serving a potential audience of 3.6 million people, giving it the largest collective footprint for an FM radio station in Ohio. The station's programming prominently features national and international news from NPR, American Public Media, Public Radio Exchange, and the BBC World Service. In addition to its main broadcast, WKSU utilizes HD Radio technology to offer distinct subchannels, including a dedicated folk music stream via FolkAlley.com on HD2, and an alternative news and talk lineup on HD4. Its signal is further enhanced by a MaxxCasting System in Cleveland, specifically designed to improve coverage in weaker areas, extending to Lorain County and western Greater Cleveland via a 104.9 FM repeater.
